Cardigan. Something about this song makes me angry at the best friend whom I slowly fell in love with every time, even though that person doesn't even exist. It's first love woven into a song. It's missing someone so much your chest aches. It's perfect.
August. This song makes me miss a boy who doesn't remember I exist. The depressing lyrics juxtaposed by the whimsical music screams summer love gone wrong.
Hoax. Honestly, it's hard not to place this song higher on the list. The pain it causes me shouldn't be possible for the human body to experience.
Exile (feat. Bon Iver). I don't know who Bon Iver is, but I'm a little bit in love with him. This song has me breathless from running from lost love to painful to even process. The two perspectives show how sometimes no one ever wins in a break up, especially when it could've been avoided with a little understanding.
My Tears Ricochet. The toxicity described in this song is unmatched and painfully relatable. You can hear the raw emotion in her voice and in the lyrics. It's honest and harsh and beautiful.
Mirrorball. The unapologetic display of insecurity is brave enough to bring a tear to my eye, even while I'm bopping my head along to the catchy beat.
Illicit Affairs. I wouldn't expect to cry to song from the perspective of the other woman, but great writing is cause for great feats of empathy.
Seven. Oh, the loss of youth an innocence. It's something everyone grieves, perfectly described in this masterpiece.
Epiphany. Perfect for the current state of the world, this song makes me feel heard as it transforms injustice into song.
Invisible String. This song is unique in that it makes me cry at the sugary sweetness of it, rather than with second hand grief. I love it. It brings a tear to my eye while giving me hope that maybe love does have the power to make us all a little bit better.
Mad Woman. I don't know a woman who couldn't relate to this absolute bop to some degree. Angry tears - that's all I need to say.
This is me Trying. This song is a plea for help and beg for forgiveness. A masterpiece.
The 1. When I listen to this song, I'm sitting at a coffee shop on a crisp fall day thinking of a love I thought would last forever. I live for the storytelling.
Peace. Another great moment of honest, relatable self-reflection. Who doesn't struggle with a little paranoia when it comes to matters of the heart?
Betty. I love this song, even though it's far from the saddest on the album. It offers such a fun twist of perspective, capturing a confused, teenage boy in love.
Last Great American Dynasty. Though far from sad, it's an absolute jam, made better by the true story it describes.
